Nepeta cataria, commonly known as catnip, is a hardy, aromatic perennial herb in the mint family that forms loose, upright clumps with a softly gray-green appearance and a relaxed, slightly wild habit. Mature plants typically grow 24 to 36 inches tall and spread 18 to 24 inches wide, though in rich soil they may sprawl a bit wider. The heart-shaped to triangular leaves measure about 2 to 3 inches long and 1 to 2 inches wide, with scalloped edges and a fine, velvety texture from tiny hairs that give the foliage its muted tone and characteristic minty scent. Square, branching stems may reach roughly ⅛ to ¼ inch thick, supporting airy growth that sways easily in the breeze. From late spring through summer, catnip sends up slender flowering spikes 3 to 8 inches long, bearing clusters of small, tubular blossoms typically ¼ to ⅜ inch long, colored white to pale lavender with delicate purple speckles on the lower lips. Individual flower whorls are spaced along the upper stems, creating a soft, tiered look that attracts bees and butterflies. The root system is fibrous and moderately spreading, generally occupying the upper 8 to 10 inches of soil. When in bloom, the plant develops a light, cloudlike texture that blends well in cottage gardens, herb beds, and naturalized areas, offering both ornamental value and the well-known feline appeal of its fragrant foliage.
