Matricaria chamomilla (commonly known as chamomile) is a delicate, aromatic annual herb that typically reaches a mature height of about 12 to 24 inches, though under ideal growing conditions it can occasionally stretch up to around 30 inches tall. The plant forms a light, airy canopy with a spread of approximately 8 to 18 inches, creating a loosely branched, feathery appearance. Its finely divided, threadlike leaves are usually 1 to 3 inches long, giving the foliage a soft, fernlike texture. Slender, erect stems—often branching near the top—support numerous small flower heads, each measuring roughly 0.5 to 1 inch across. These daisy-like blooms feature white ray florets surrounding a prominent yellow cone-shaped center, which can rise about 0.25 to 0.5 inches high as it matures. Individual flower stalks may extend 2 to 6 inches above the foliage, contributing to the plant’s light, open habit. The root system is relatively shallow and fibrous, generally occupying the top 6 to 10 inches of soil. Matricaria chamomilla maintains a graceful, compact form well-suited to garden beds, borders, and herb plantings, with its modest dimensions allowing it to fit easily into small spaces while still producing abundant blooms.
