Sophora macrocarpa, commonly known in Chile as mayu or Chilean kōwhai, is a graceful evergreen to semi-evergreen tree that typically reaches about 15 to 30 feet in height, though under favorable conditions it can occasionally grow up to around 40 feet tall, with a spread of approximately 12 to 25 feet, forming a rounded to slightly open canopy. The trunk is often short and somewhat irregular, usually measuring between 6 and 14 inches in diameter, and may develop a subtly twisted or leaning habit with age. Its pinnate leaves generally measure about 3 to 6 inches long, composed of numerous small, rounded to oval leaflets that are typically 0.3 to 0.8 inches in length, giving the foliage a fine, delicate texture. In late winter to early spring, the tree produces abundant pendulous yellow flowers, each about 1 to 2 inches long, hanging in clusters that can extend roughly 2 to 5 inches in length, creating a vivid ornamental display against the darker foliage. Following the bloom, elongated seed pods develop, usually measuring about 3 to 6 inches long and approximately 0.2 to 0.4 inches thick, often slightly constricted between the seeds, resulting in a subtly segmented appearance. Sophora macrocarpa exhibits a moderate growth rate and an elegant, spreading form, with proportions that make it well suited for ornamental planting in mild climates where its size and floral dimensions can be fully appreciated.
