Trichosanthes kirilowii is a vigorous, twining perennial vine that can extend anywhere from about 10 to 20 feet in length, occasionally reaching even longer under ideal growing conditions, with slender, climbing stems typically ¼ to ½ inch thick. The leaves are broadly heart-shaped to shallowly lobed, measuring roughly 3 to 6 inches across and 2.5 to 5 inches long, borne on petioles around 1 to 3 inches in length. Its striking, fringed white flowers span approximately 2 to 4 inches in diameter, with delicate, lace-like margins that can extend the visual width even further. Following pollination, the plant produces elongated, cylindrical fruits that are typically 6 to 12 inches long and about 1 to 2 inches in diameter, often tapering slightly at the ends. Beneath the soil, the plant develops a substantial, tuberous root that can grow 8 to 16 inches long and 2 to 4 inches thick, sometimes larger with age. Overall spread of the vine, when supported on a trellis or allowed to ramble, can cover an area of 6 to 12 feet wide, depending on pruning and support structure, making it both an ornamental and functional climber with notable vertical and horizontal reach.
