Callicarpa americana, commonly known as American beautyberry, is a deciduous native shrub admired for its graceful arching branches and vivid clusters of berries that wrap tightly around the stems in fall. It typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall with a spread of 3 to 6 feet wide, though in warm, favorable conditions it can occasionally reach close to 8 feet in height. The stems are slender and slightly fuzzy when young, supporting oval to broadly lance-shaped leaves that measure about 3 to 6 inches long and 1 to 3 inches wide, with softly toothed edges and a light green color that turns yellowish in autumn. Small, pale pink to lavender flowers appear in tight clusters along the leaf axils in late spring to early summer, each bloom only about 1/8 inch across, but produced in abundance. These are followed by the plant’s signature fruit: dense rings of glossy, bright purple berries about 1/8 to 1/4 inch in diameter, forming striking bead-like whorls around the stems from late summer into winter. The root system is fibrous and relatively shallow, helping the shrub adapt to woodland edges and open understory conditions, while the branches may extend 2 to 4 feet outward in a gently cascading form, giving the plant a soft, fountain-like silhouette.
