Platanus acerifolia, commonly known as the London Plane tree or Sycamore, is a large, deciduous hybrid species that is widely planted in urban environments for its resilience and ornamental value. This tree is believed to be a cross between the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) and the Oriental plane (Platanus orientalis), combining the hardiness of both parents. It typically grows 70 to 100 feet tall with a broad, spreading canopy, making it an excellent shade tree for streets, parks, and large landscapes. One of its most distinctive features is its mottled bark, which peels away in patches to reveal a mosaic of green, cream, and gray, giving the trunk an attractive, camouflage-like appearance. The leaves are large, maple-like, and deeply lobed, turning yellow to brown in autumn before dropping. The tree produces round, spiky fruit clusters that persist into winter, adding seasonal interest. Highly tolerant of pollution, pruning, and poor soils, the London Plane is a favorite for city planting, as it withstands harsh conditions and helps filter air pollutants. Its adaptability and impressive size make it a landmark tree.
