Euphorbia lathyris, commonly known as the caper spurge or mole plant, is a distinctive biennial species valued for its architectural form and unusual foliage. In its first year, it forms a low rosette of blue-green leaves, and in the second year it sends up tall, upright stems lined with pairs of narrow, lance-shaped leaves arranged in a precise, opposite pattern that gives the plant an almost geometric appearance. The chartreuse bracts that appear in late spring to early summer surround inconspicuous flowers and lend the plant a bright, luminous quality in the landscape. Known historically for its reputed ability to deter burrowing pests—though scientific evidence is limited—the species contains a milky latex sap that is toxic and can cause skin irritation, so handling with care is essential. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, Euphorbia lathyris self-seeds readily and brings a bold, sculptural presence to dry gardens, gravel plantings, and naturalized areas.
