Pinus strobus, commonly known as the eastern white pine, is a majestic evergreen conifer native to eastern North America. It is characterized by its tall, straight trunk and soft, flexible needles arranged in clusters of five, giving the tree a graceful, feathery appearance. Capable of reaching heights over 150 feet in optimal conditions, it is one of the tallest native trees in the eastern United States. The bark is smooth and gray on young trees, becoming darker and furrowed with age. Slender, elongated cones dangle gracefully from its branches, releasing winged seeds that provide food for birds and small mammals. Pinus strobus thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and full sun, and is valued both as an ornamental and a timber tree, prized for its light, straight-grained wood. Its stately form and soft texture make it a cherished symbol of the North American forest.
