Clerodendrum trichotomum, commonly known as harlequin glorybower, is a deciduous shrub or small tree celebrated for its combination of fragrant flowers, colorful fruit, and pleasantly aromatic foliage. Typically growing 8–20 feet tall with a rounded, loosely branched form, it bears large, opposite, heart-shaped leaves that release a distinctive peanut-butter scent when crushed. In late summer, the plant produces showy clusters of star-shaped, white, jasmine-scented flowers emerging from rosy calyces, attracting butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. As the blooms fade, the calyces transform into vivid, metallic red or magenta structures that cradle glossy, bright blue drupes—an eye-catching ornamental feature that persists well into autumn. Hardy and adaptable, Clerodendrum trichotomum thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring well-drained, moderately fertile soils, though it tolerates a range of conditions once established. It can sucker freely, forming thickets if not managed, but with proper pruning it becomes an exceptional focal plant for sensory gardens, wildlife plantings, and late-season color displays.
