Physalis angulata, commonly called the cutleaf groundcherry, balloon cherry, or wild cape gooseberry, is an annual herbaceous plant in the nightshade family (Solanaceae) widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions of the world, including the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Growing typically between 1 and 3 feet tall, it features angular, branching stems and toothed, lanceolate to ovate leaves that give it a distinctive appearance. Its small, bell-shaped yellow flowers with dark markings at the throat develop into round, greenish to golden berries that are enclosed in a papery, lantern-like husk, a hallmark of the genus Physalis. These fruits are edible when fully ripe and have long been used in local cuisines, though they can be toxic if consumed unripe. Ecologically, the plant plays an important role in disturbed habitats, old fields, and roadsides, where it readily self-seeds and provides food for birds and small mammals.
