Tsuga canadensis, commonly known as the Eastern hemlock, is a graceful, long-lived evergreen conifer native to eastern North America, valued for its feathery texture and elegant, pyramidal form. In natural forest settings, it typically reaches heights of 40 to 70 feet, though exceptional specimens can exceed 100 feet tall, with a trunk diameter ranging from 2 to 4 feet. The crown often spreads 25 to 35 feet wide, forming a soft, layered silhouette with slightly drooping branch tips. Its flat, dark green needles measure about 1/4 to 3/4 inch long and are arranged in two ranks along the twig, each needle displaying two pale silvery-white bands beneath. The small, oval cones are generally 1/2 to 1 inch long and hang delicately from the branches, maturing from green to light brown in a single growing season. The bark, initially smooth and gray on young trees, becomes deeply furrowed and ridged with age, sometimes forming plates several inches thick. Eastern hemlock thrives in cool, moist environments and can live for 400 to 800 years under favorable conditions, developing a dense canopy that casts deep shade and creates a cool, sheltered understory habitat.
