Lavandula multifida is a fine-textured lavender that typically grows as a compact, short-lived perennial or subshrub, reaching about 18 to 36 inches in height with a spread of roughly 24 to 36 inches, though in especially warm, frost-free climates it may stretch closer to 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. The plant forms a loose, airy mound of deeply divided, fern-like foliage, with individual leaves measuring approximately 1 to 3 inches long and about ½ to 1 inch wide, giving it a soft, lacy appearance. Flowering stems rise several inches above the foliage, often extending the plant’s total height by an additional 6 to 10 inches, and bear slender, cylindrical flower spikes that are typically 1½ to 3 inches long and about ¼ to ½ inch thick. Each spike is composed of small tubular blossoms arranged in whorls, creating a delicate but elongated look compared to more compact lavender species. The stems themselves are somewhat woody at the base, usually around ¼ inch thick as they mature, while newer growth remains soft and green. Overall, the plant’s dimensions give it a more open, less dense form than other lavenders, making it especially suited for informal plantings or as a light, textural accent in gardens.
