Prunus umbellata, commonly known as the hog plum or flatwoods plum, is a small deciduous tree or large shrub native to the southeastern United States, especially thriving in dry hammocks, pine flatwoods, and well-drained sandy soils. It typically grows 3–8 meters tall with a rounded to irregular crown and slender, often thorny branches. The lanceolate leaves emerge bright green and slightly glossy, turning yellowish in fall before dropping. In very early spring—often before the foliage appears—the plant produces profuse clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that provide an important nectar source for early pollinators. These are followed by round, tart, purple-black drupes that ripen in late summer and are eaten by wildlife as well as used for traditional jellies and preserves. Hardy, adaptable, and tolerant of drought once established, Prunus umbellata is valued for its seasonal interest, ecological benefits, and suitability for naturalistic or restoration plantings.
