Fraxinus ornus, commonly known as the manna ash or flowering ash, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree valued for its fragrant spring blossoms and graceful form. It typically grows 30–50 feet tall with a spread of about 20–35 feet, forming a rounded to broadly oval crown. The trunk may reach 12–24 inches in diameter, with gray to dark gray bark that becomes slightly furrowed as the tree matures. Its pinnately compound leaves usually measure 8–14 inches long and consist of 5–9 oval to lance-shaped leaflets, each leaflet about 2–4 inches long and 1–2 inches wide, with softly serrated margins and a smooth or slightly hairy underside. In late spring, the tree produces showy clusters of creamy-white, fragrant flowers arranged in dense panicles that can reach 4–8 inches long, often covering much of the canopy. After flowering, narrow winged fruits (samaras) develop, each typically 1–1.5 inches long with a slender seed cavity and elongated wing that aids wind dispersal. Twigs are relatively slender, often ⅛–¼ inch thick, and support rounded buds about ⅛–¼ inch long. Overall, the manna ash has a refined, moderately spreading habit with delicate foliage and conspicuous bloom clusters that make it an attractive ornamental tree in temperate landscapes.
