Myosotis sylvatica, commonly known as woodland forget-me-not, is a charming, low-growing, short-lived perennial or biennial prized for its clouds of delicate blue flowers and soft, cottage-garden character. It typically forms loose clumps about 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads 8 to 12 inches wide, creating a gentle, mounding groundcover effect. The plant produces slender, slightly hairy stems with oblong to lance-shaped leaves measuring roughly 1 to 3 inches long, arranged in a basal rosette with smaller leaves along the stems. In spring and early summer, it sends up airy sprays of tiny, five-petaled flowers, each about ¼ to ⅓ inch across, most often sky blue with a contrasting yellow or white eye, though pink and white forms also exist. Flower clusters can reach 2 to 4 inches across, giving a soft, misty appearance when planted in groups. The root system is fibrous and relatively shallow, making it well suited to woodland edges, shaded borders, and containers. Plants prefer consistently moist, well-drained soil and perform best in partial shade, though they tolerate more sun in cool climates. Individual plants may only live a couple of years, but they readily self-seed, maintaining drifts that can spread gradually over 1 to 2 feet or more under favorable conditions, creating a naturalized, storybook carpet of bloom.
