Helianthus annuus ‘Mammoth Gray Stripe’ is a classic giant sunflower cultivar known for both its height and exceptionally large seed heads. Mature plants typically reach 8 to 12 feet tall, though in rich soil and full sun they can approach 14 feet, supported by a thick, sturdy, slightly rough stem that commonly measures 1.5 to 3 inches in diameter near the base. The foliage is bold and expansive, with broadly heart-shaped leaves usually 6 to 12 inches long and 5 to 10 inches wide, featuring coarse hairs and prominent veins. The enormous flowering head is a defining trait, generally ranging from 10 to 15 inches across, but frequently reaching 18 inches or more under ideal growing conditions; the central disk alone can measure 8 to 12 inches wide and is densely packed with developing seeds. Surrounding this disk are bright yellow ray florets, each about 2 to 4 inches long, forming the classic sunflower “petals.” The root system includes a strong taproot that may extend 4 to 6 feet deep, along with lateral roots spreading roughly 1.5 to 3 feet outward, providing stability and efficient water uptake. The seeds themselves are large and elongated, typically about 0.5 to 0.75 inches long, with the characteristic gray-and-white striped hulls that give the cultivar its name, and a single mature head can produce well over 1,000 seeds.
