Gomphrena globosa, commonly known as the globe amaranth, is a compact, heat-loving annual prized for its long-lasting, clover-like blooms and tidy growth habit. Typically reaching about 12 to 24 inches in height with a spread of 6 to 12 inches, it forms rounded mounds of branching stems that create a dense, bushy appearance. The oval to slightly elongated leaves generally measure 2 to 4 inches long and about 1 to 2 inches wide, with a soft, slightly fuzzy texture. Its distinctive flower heads are globe-shaped and usually measure about 1 to 1½ inches in diameter, sitting atop sturdy stems that may rise several inches above the foliage, making them excellent for cutting. The plant develops a moderately deep taproot system suited to well-drained soils and can thrive through hot summer conditions, maintaining continuous bloom from early summer until the first frost. Overall, its manageable size and vibrant, long-lasting flowers make it ideal for borders, containers, and mass plantings in sunny garden settings.
