Clematis viticella, commonly known as Italian clematis or viticella clematis, is a vigorous deciduous climbing vine admired for its graceful growth habit and abundant summer flowers. Mature plants typically reach 10 to 20 feet in length, spreading 3 to 6 feet wide as stems scramble and twine through trellises, fences, shrubs, or small trees. Slender, flexible stems emerge from a woody crown and produce pinnate leaves measuring 3 to 6 inches long, each composed of leaflets about 1 to 2½ inches long and ½ to 1½ inches wide. The nodding, bell-shaped to open flowers usually measure 2 to 3½ inches across, smaller than many large-flowered hybrids but produced in remarkable numbers over a long season. Individual petals (technically sepals) average 1½ to 2 inches long, forming elegant, slightly recurved blooms in shades of violet, purple, rose, red, or lavender. Flowering generally occurs from early summer into early fall, often lasting 8 to 12 weeks under favorable conditions. Following bloom, decorative silky seed heads develop, each plume extending roughly 1 to 2 inches long. The root system spreads moderately, occupying about 18 to 24 inches of soil depth, while new annual growth can extend several feet per season, especially in fertile, well-drained soil. When provided with support and regular pruning, Clematis viticella forms a light yet dense vertical display, combining substantial height with relatively fine-textured foliage and medium-sized blossoms.
