Viola tricolor, commonly known as wild pansy or heartsease, is a delicate herbaceous annual or short-lived perennial flowering plant that typically grows 4 to 10 inches tall with a spreading habit reaching 6 to 12 inches wide. The plant develops slender, branching stems that may be upright or slightly sprawling, forming low mats or loose clumps near the ground. Leaves are alternate and variable in shape, generally measuring ¾ to 2½ inches long and ½ to 1½ inches wide, with rounded to lance-shaped blades and deeply cut stipules that can appear almost leaf-like. The distinctive flowers arise singly on thin stalks extending 1 to 3 inches above the foliage, each bloom measuring approximately ¾ to 1¼ inches across. Flowers display the classic pansy pattern of overlapping petals, usually violet, blue, yellow, and white with darker nectar guides. The root system is shallow and fibrous, extending roughly 4 to 8 inches into the soil, allowing the plant to thrive in thin or disturbed ground. Individual plants commonly spread by self-seeding, forming colonies that may cover areas 1 to 2 feet across under favorable conditions. Flowering occurs from early spring through late summer, and seed capsules develop to about ¼ inch long, splitting open to disperse small seeds several inches away from the parent plant. Overall, Viola tricolor remains compact and finely textured, making it well suited for borders, meadow plantings, rock gardens, and naturalized landscapes where its modest stature and continuous bloom provide subtle yet persistent seasonal color.
