Campanula punctata, commonly known as the spotted bellflower, is a hardy perennial herbaceous plant native to East Asia, particularly Japan, Korea, and parts of China, where it grows naturally in woodland margins, meadows, and grassy slopes. It forms clumps of upright, softly hairy stems that typically reach 12–30 inches (30–75 cm) in height, arising from spreading rhizomes that allow the plant to slowly naturalize in favorable conditions. The basal leaves are ovate to heart-shaped with toothed margins and long petioles, while the upper stem leaves are smaller and more narrowly shaped. From late spring through summer, Campanula punctata produces its most distinctive feature: large, pendulous, bell-shaped flowers that hang gracefully from the stems. These blooms are usually pale pink to creamy white and are heavily speckled with dark purple or maroon spots on the interior, a trait that gives the species its name and adds ornamental intrigue. The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators and are followed by small capsule fruits containing fine seeds. Preferring moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, though tolerant of full sun in cooler climates, Campanula punctata is valued in cottage gardens, woodland plantings, and perennial borders for its long bloom period, soft texture, and unique floral patterning.
