Lagerstroemia speciosa, commonly known as the Queen’s Crape Myrtle, is a deciduous to semi-evergreen tree admired for its lavish floral displays, attractive bark, and cultural significance across tropical Asia. Typically reaching 10–20 meters in height, it develops an upright, rounded crown with smooth, pale gray to light brown bark that peels in thin flakes to reveal mottled patches beneath. Its large, elliptic leaves—glossy green when mature—turn shades of coppery red as they emerge and may flush yellow before dropping in drier seasons. The tree’s most celebrated feature is its showy panicles of crinkled, crepe-textured flowers, which appear in vibrant shades of lavender, rose-pink, or purple, blooming profusely during warm months and often lasting several weeks. These blossoms give way to hard, globular, woody capsules that split open to release numerous winged seeds. Preferring full sun, heat, and moist but well-drained soils, Lagerstroemia speciosa thrives in monsoonal climates and performs well as a street tree, ornamental focal point, or shade provider in parks and gardens. Beyond its landscape value, the species holds medicinal importance in many cultures—especially in Southeast Asia and the Philippines—where its leaves are traditionally brewed as “banaba tea,” believed to support metabolic health. Robust, drought-tolerant once established, and visually magnificent when in bloom, the Queen’s Crape Myrtle remains one of the most iconic flowering trees of the tropical world.
