Lewisia cotyledon, commonly called Siskiyou lewisia, is a charming evergreen perennial native to rocky slopes and cliffs of Oregon and northern California, where it thrives in the rugged landscapes of the Siskiyou Mountains. Belonging to the Montiaceae family, this plant is renowned for its striking rosettes of fleshy, lance-shaped, dark green leaves that form an attractive evergreen base throughout the year. In late spring to early summer, it sends up wiry stems topped with showy clusters of star-shaped flowers in a dazzling range of colors, from soft pastels of pink, peach, and yellow to vibrant shades of orange, coral, and magenta, often streaked or banded with lighter hues, giving them a painted appearance. These blooms not only add brilliant color to rock gardens, troughs, and alpine plantings but also attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Lewisia cotyledon is well adapted to dry, well-drained conditions and prefers sandy or gritty soils, reflecting its natural mountain habitat where water drains quickly. It is drought-tolerant once established but does not tolerate excessive moisture around the roots, making careful site selection essential. Gardeners often grow it in rock crevices, raised beds, or containers to mimic its native environment and protect it from winter wetness. Long valued as one of the most ornamental of the Lewisia genus, it is also a recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, highlighting its beauty and resilience when properly cared for. With its combination of evergreen foliage, jewel-toned blossoms, and adaptability to alpine settings, Lewisia cotyledon is treasured by rock garden enthusiasts and collectors alike.
