Yucca treculeana, commonly called Spanish dagger or Don Quixote’s lace, is a large, architectural evergreen yucca native to Texas and northern Mexico, notable for its massive trunk and rigid, sword-like foliage. Mature plants typically develop a single stout trunk reaching 10 to 25 feet tall, though exceptional specimens may approach 30 feet in height, with trunk diameters commonly measuring 12 to 24 inches thick at the base. The crown forms a dense rosette 6 to 10 feet wide, composed of numerous stiff, blue-green to gray-green leaves that measure approximately 2 to 4 feet long and 1½ to 3 inches wide, each ending in a sharp terminal spine up to 1 inch long. Older leaves persist along the trunk, creating a skirted appearance before eventually shedding and revealing rough, fibrous bark. In late spring to early summer, mature plants produce an impressive upright flower stalk rising 3 to 6 feet above the foliage, bearing large panicles 2 to 4 feet long filled with creamy white, bell-shaped flowers about 2 to 3 inches long. After pollination, elongated seed capsules develop, typically measuring 2 to 3 inches long and about 1 to 1½ inches wide. The root system spreads broadly, often extending 8 to 15 feet outward, allowing the plant to anchor securely in rocky or sandy soils and withstand drought conditions. A mature Yucca treculeana may occupy an overall landscape presence 8 to 12 feet across, forming a dramatic vertical accent well suited to arid gardens, xeriscapes, and desert-inspired plantings.
