Spiraea tomentosa, commonly known as steeplebush or hardhack, is a deciduous shrub native to the wetlands, moist meadows, and streambanks of eastern North America. This attractive plant typically grows 2 to 4 feet tall and is noted for its dense, upright habit and showy, spire-like clusters of tiny pink to rose-purple flowers that bloom from mid- to late summer, providing a valuable nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The lance-shaped leaves are dark green on top and covered with a soft, woolly, grayish tomentum on the undersides, giving the shrub its species name and adding textural interest throughout the growing season. In autumn, the foliage often turns warm shades of yellow or bronze, extending its ornamental appeal. Spiraea tomentosa thrives in acidic, moist to wet soils and is highly tolerant of poor drainage, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, naturalized wetland plantings, or erosion control along water margins. Although its stems are somewhat stiff and woody, they can provide shelter for small wildlife, while its root system helps stabilize soils in riparian areas. Hardy and adaptable, this native shrub not only adds vibrant color to late-season landscapes but also plays an important ecological role in supporting pollinators and enhancing wetland biodiversity.
