Helianthus annuus ‘Henry Wilde’ is a branching, multi-flowered sunflower cultivar distinguished more by its spread and number of blooms than by extreme height, typically maturing between about 4 and 6 feet tall with a bushy, open habit that can spread 2 to 4 feet wide. The main stem and numerous lateral branches are moderately stout, usually around 0.75 to 1.5 inches thick at the base, becoming progressively slimmer toward the upper flowering shoots. Leaves are medium to large, generally 4 to 10 inches long and 3 to 8 inches wide, broadly ovate with a slightly pointed tip, rough texture, and serrated margins. Instead of one massive head, this cultivar produces many smaller to medium-sized flower heads, each typically measuring 3 to 6 inches in diameter, with central disks about 1.5 to 3 inches wide surrounded by golden-yellow ray florets that are about 1 to 2 inches long. Because of its branching nature, a single plant can carry dozens of blooms over an extended flowering period. Below ground, it develops a moderately deep taproot reaching approximately 2 to 4 feet, accompanied by lateral roots spreading 1 to 2 feet outward, supporting its multi-stemmed growth. Seeds are smaller than those of giant types, usually around 0.3 to 0.5 inches long, and are produced in abundance across the numerous flower heads rather than concentrated in a single large disk.
