Iberis amara, commonly known as candytuft, is a compact, herbaceous annual that typically grows to a height of about 8 to 16 inches, with a spread of roughly 6 to 12 inches, forming an upright to slightly bushy habit. The slender stems are green and branching, often becoming somewhat woody toward the base as the plant matures. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves usually measure about 1 to 3 inches long and approximately 0.2 to 0.5 inches wide, with smooth or slightly toothed edges, and are arranged alternately along the stems. The plant is especially noted for its clusters of small, white flowers, each measuring about 0.25 to 0.5 inches across, arranged in flat-topped clusters (corymbs) that can reach 1 to 3 inches in width, giving a dense, showy appearance during the blooming period. Flowering typically occurs in late spring to early summer, after which small seed pods develop, usually around 0.2 to 0.4 inches long, containing tiny seeds. Iberis amara has a relatively fast growth rate and modest dimensions, making it well suited for borders, cottage gardens, and naturalized plantings where its compact size and floral display can be appreciated.
