The tropical tree Couroupita guianensis, commonly known as the cannonball tree, is a spectacular flowering species admired for its immense size, fragrant blooms, and unusually large fruit. In mature landscapes, this fast-growing tree typically reaches heights of 50 to 80 feet tall with a broad, rounded canopy spreading 35 to 50 feet wide, creating dense tropical shade. The straight trunk can measure 1 to 3 feet in diameter and is often covered directly with clusters of waxy, aromatic flowers that emerge on long woody stalks extending 3 to 6 feet from the trunk. Individual blossoms measure approximately 2 to 4 inches across and display vivid shades of scarlet, pink, orange, and yellow with intricate curled stamens. The tree produces massive spherical fruits resembling cannonballs that commonly measure 6 to 10 inches in diameter and can weigh several pounds each, hanging in heavy clusters along the trunk for many months. Its glossy green leaves generally grow 5 to 12 inches long and 2 to 5 inches wide, forming dense foliage concentrated near branch tips. Couroupita guianensis thrives in warm tropical climates where it can serve as a dramatic ornamental centerpiece in large gardens, botanical collections, parks, or estate landscapes, offering exotic flowers, impressive proportions, and a truly unforgettable appearance.
