Manilkara zapota, commonly known as sapodilla or sapota, is an evergreen tropical tree prized for its sweet fruit and resilient growth habit. Native to southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, this species forms a dense, rounded canopy with glossy, elongated leaves that remain attractive year-round. Mature trees can reach 15–30 meters in height, with a straight trunk often exuding a milky latex historically used to produce chicle, the original base for chewing gum. The small, inconspicuous, cream-colored flowers develop into round to oval fruits with rough brown skin and soft, grainy, brownish flesh rich in sugars and subtle spicy notes. Highly tolerant of drought, wind, salt spray, and poor soils, Manilkara zapota thrives in warm, frost-free climates and is well suited to coastal landscapes and home orchards. Its deep root system and slow, steady growth make it durable and long-lived, while the fruit’s extended ripening season provides multiple harvests throughout the year. Admirably adaptable, the sapodilla tree serves both ornamental and productive roles, valued for its shade, its dependable fruit production, and its ability to withstand challenging environmental conditions.
