Luffa aegyptiaca — commonly known as the Egyptian luffa, smooth luffa, or sponge gourd — is a vigorous annual vine belonging to the cucumber family, Cucurbitaceae. Native to tropical Africa and Asia, it is widely cultivated in warm regions around the world for both its edible young fruits and the fibrous sponge obtained from mature fruits.

This fast-growing, climbing plant can reach up to 9 meters (30 feet) in length, with deeply lobed leaves and bright yellow, star-shaped flowers that attract pollinators such as bees. The elongated, green fruits resemble zucchinis when immature and are tender enough to be eaten as a vegetable, often used in soups, curries, and stir-fries. When the fruits mature and dry, the inner tissue transforms into a coarse network of cellulose fibers, which are harvested, cleaned, and used as natural sponges for bathing, cleaning, or even industrial purposes.

Luffa aegyptiaca thrives in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil with consistent moisture during the growing season. It prefers warm temperatures and a long frost-free period. In addition to its culinary and household uses, the plant also has ecological and aesthetic value as a vigorous ornamental vine for trellises, fences, and arbors, adding lush greenery and large yellow blooms to gardens.
