Erythrina corallodendron, commonly known as the coral tree or Jamaican coral tree, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree in the Fabaceae family, native to the Caribbean and widely cultivated in tropical regions for its striking ornamental value. It typically reaches heights of 6–12 meters and is renowned for its dramatic, vividly colored flowers, which are bright scarlet to coral-red and appear in dense clusters along the branches, often before the leaves emerge, creating a spectacular visual display that attracts hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators. The tree features smooth gray bark and pinnate leaves with three leaflets, giving it a delicate, lacy appearance, and its branches often spread horizontally, forming an open, umbrella-like canopy that provides light shade. Erythrina corallodendron prefers full sun and well-drained soils, demonstrating moderate drought tolerance once established, and it thrives in both urban and garden landscapes, including avenues, parks, and tropical home gardens. Beyond its ornamental use, various parts of the tree have been traditionally used in folk medicine, although the seeds and other tissues contain toxic alkaloids, making them poisonous if ingested. The coral tree’s combination of spectacular flowering, manageable size, and ecological benefits, including supporting pollinators, makes it a highly valued species for tropical landscaping and conservation plantings.
