Pachypodium lamerei, commonly called the Madagascar palm though not a true palm, is a succulent tree known for its dramatic architectural form and impressive drought tolerance. It typically develops a single, upright trunk densely covered with long, sharp spines arranged in spiraling rows, giving it a formidable yet sculptural appearance. As it matures, the trunk can swell noticeably at the base to store water, while the crown becomes topped with a cluster of long, narrow, leathery leaves that radiate outward like a palm. In ideal warm climates or greenhouse conditions, mature plants may produce large, fragrant, white, trumpet-shaped flowers that contrast beautifully with the armored stem. Native to the arid regions of Madagascar, Pachypodium lamerei thrives in full sun, excellent drainage, and infrequent watering, making it well-suited to xeric gardens, desert landscapes, and indoor cultivation where bright light is abundant. Despite its rugged nature, it is sensitive to prolonged cold and excessive moisture, which can lead to rot. With its combination of exotic silhouette, slow growth, and resilience, this species is often valued as a living sculptural focal point in modern gardens and container displays.
