Senna surattensis, commonly known as golden cassia or glaucous cassia, is a fast-growing evergreen shrub to small tree admired for its abundant golden flowers and soft, feathery foliage. Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia, it develops an open, spreading crown with arching branches lined with pinnate leaves composed of numerous oval leaflets that give the plant a delicate, airy texture. Throughout much of the year—especially in warm climates—it produces large clusters of bright yellow, five-petaled blooms that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, followed by slender, curved seed pods that dry to a rich brown. Senna surattensis thrives in full sun, heat, and well-drained soils, tolerating drought once established and flourishing in both coastal and inland settings. Its rapid growth and reliable flowering make it a popular choice for ornamental plantings, streetscapes, and tropical gardens, where it provides vivid color, light shade, and a graceful, informal structure. In some regions it may naturalize and spread readily, so responsible cultivation and occasional pruning help maintain its form and prevent unwanted dispersal, while also encouraging vigorous new growth and heavier bloom production.
