Duranta erecta—commonly known as golden dewdrop, skyflower, or pigeonberry—is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree admired for its vibrant foliage and showy blooms. Native to the tropical Americas, it typically reaches 6–18 feet tall, forming a dense, arching habit with slender, sometimes lightly spiny stems. Its leaves are bright green or golden-tinted in certain cultivars, arranged opposite along the stems, and provide a lush backdrop to its floral displays. From spring through fall, Duranta produces cascading clusters of delicate lavender to deep violet, occasionally white, tubular flowers edged in a lighter tone, which draw in butterflies and other pollinators. These are followed by pendulous chains of glossy, golden-orange berries that add ornamental interest and serve as a food source for birds, though they are considered toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Well suited to warm climates, it thrives in full sun, moderate watering, and well-drained soil, making it a popular choice for hedges, accent plantings, or container culture in mild regions.
