Allium cepa 'Red Creole' is a compact, warm-climate onion variety prized for its heat tolerance and strong flavor, typically reaching an overall plant height of about 12 to 24 inches, with a spread of roughly 4 to 8 inches per plant in the garden. The upright, tubular leaves are slender and hollow, usually growing 0.25 to 0.5 inches thick and extending 10 to 20 inches in length, forming a tight cluster above the developing bulb. The mature bulbs are medium-sized, generally measuring about 2 to 3 inches in diameter, with a slightly flattened to globe shape and firm, tightly layered flesh. The outer skin is deep reddish-purple, while the inner rings are tinged with red and white. When allowed to flower, the plant produces a leafless stalk, or scape, that can rise 24 to 36 inches tall, topped with a rounded umbel about 2 to 4 inches across composed of many small, pale lavender to pinkish-white flowers. Allium cepa ‘Red Creole’ is a relatively uniform, space-efficient cultivar, with dimensions that make it well suited for row planting and high-density vegetable gardens, especially in southern regions where its size and growth habit perform reliably in warm conditions.
